On January 23, 2020, a very important site for birds including for the Red-breasted Goose – Eagle Marsh, part of Durankulak Lake, was burned.
The fire was raging in the northernmost part of the lake, which is located near camping Cosmos. It was captured, thanks to the quick response of the local Fire Department.
Dozens of acres from the protected area have burned. Fortunately, the reed beds located in the central part of the lake were not affected.
The fire has begun at about 1.30 p.m., turning into a fiery element very fast with 6-7 meters of flames. A BSPB ‘s team working in the area at that time called 112 and RIEW – Varna. Firefighters succeed to quickly extinguish the fire. The police are investigating the case as it is very likely to be an intentional arson.
