The Red-breasted Goose conservation team has been busy in Kazkahstan this year. We have started work the support of the Whitley Fund for Nature continuation funding. Staff and volunteers of ACBK – Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan have initiated the first steps in the awareness activities with local communities in key region with visits to schools in Kostanai region. The local project coordinator Alexey Timoshenko made presentations on the species, its life history and conservation needs. In the end of April starts the spring hunting and though geese are not among the huntable species, our Kazakh colleagues will be out in the field with the regional authorities and hunting wardens to control for illegal shooting of protected species in Kostanai and Northern Kazkahstan regions. Further work is planned with local communities in the key staging areas of the species and with hunters. The WFN funded project CONSERVATION OF THE RED-BREASTED GOOSE IN KEY SITES ALONG THE FLYWAY is spread over two years 2004-2026 and is focused on conservation actions in key sites and areas, important for the species survival in Romania and Kazkahstan.
